Hello

I need to know where I can find some info on how to configure a heart beat server using Suse linux 9.

The material I find is all written for people who know linux not someone as dumb as I am - several questions I need answered such as:

I have 2 servers - My main web server and the one I want as a ha - do the both need configured?

What hardware is needed?

Which one gets configured first the main or the HA server.

Reading the stuff on the net only confuses me more
ARE there any HA for dummies information out there?

Try It looks pretty straightforward.

I haven't used Heartbeat 2 yet, just 1, but it's fine for a basic 2-node failover.

First, you need both configured. You'll indicate which server is primary and which is secondary.

A crossover or null modem cable is preferred, but you can just use the 2 servers' regular NICs for the heartbeat. Keep in mind that if you lose the switch, both will think they're primary- probably not an issue for web servers but might be for databases.

Both get configured, so it doesn't matter which is first. I'd probably set up the primary first, but you can manually fail them over at any time.

Hello again

Well I configured the system as the doc said and the heartbeat started but they keep failing.

When i check the logs both think that our outside DNS server is the master and the heartbeat alarms goes off do to no communications.

What am i doing wrong

I have 2 nics both connected via a crossover cable - and set to IP 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2

After reading the article a thousand times where are they getting the 192.168.1.5 virtual address for the haresources file?

I am just totally lost

They made it up. 192.168.1.5 is the virtual address which is active on one server at a time.

What's your outside DNS server address? Make sure that you can ping each server from the other using the node names. The node names in ha.cf must match uname -n and be reachable by that name.

might also help.

Ok I might have a grasp on this

My main DMZ server (WEB) carries the main IP address of 192.168.1.12 and a virtual alias IP address of 192.168.1.11
it also has the cross over IP address of 10.0.0.1

The heartbeat server has carries the main IP address of 192.168.1.12 and a virtual alias of 192.168.11.11 it also has the cross IP address of 10.0.0.2

Is this the correct set up?
Should the heartbeat server have a virtual alias and should it be the same as the main servers?

Now I don't have a storage unit as of yet so can I place the web pages on b machines and will this work or will a request for a client get confused on which box to go to?
