Hi All,

My office has a few meridian M7208 phones. These phones have an extra specifically for headsets. From what I gather there is no need for an amplidier when using a headset. Here is the question:

Why can't I use a normal 4 core wire, crimp an RJ22 connector to one end and connect a standard earphone system, one with a 1/8 inch jack on the other end and get it to work. The only thing that I am sure of doing is activating the handsfree. Does anyone know how the wiring scheme goes so that I can make up my on headset? Please let me know, my neck is killing

the handset lead is 4 wire, with two if the leads (one xmit and oen transmit) being common in the set. i would give it a try, seeems any analog headset would work. just run analog dt into the pc and use it handsfree

johnpoole thanks for the response. Are you going to try it and get back to me? I just wasn't sure what "dt" and "pc" meant.
Just some additional information, I tried disconnecting the handset then plugging in a 4 core cable with the RJ22 plugged on one end and bare wires on the other. I then used alligator clips and tested with a standard earphone set with mike. This set has a 1/8 inch connector(much like a mini stereo walkman headphone connector. I proceeded to put the M7208 in normal mode by lifting the handset then by using the alligator clips one connected to common on the jack and moved the other from one wire to the next listening for the dial tone. I got a scratchy sound on one of the pairs but other than that, no dial tone. I was wondering if the standard headset for this phone has some sort of circuitry in it. I also used the port designated for the headset and to no avail. The handset works in both ports. Again, johnpoole thanks for the assistance. I also agree that any analog headset should work.
