Headset for Partner M12

Afternoon. Question, in order to connect a headset to a Partner M12 keyset does it always require that a Partner base unit be connected in order for the headset and the handset to operate on the phone ? Or is it feasible to put in a "Y" cable that will allow you to toggle between the headset and handset.

As always any help would be appreciated.
