I have a customer who has requested the following:

"The programming according to Bev here in my office is not in the book, however if you program a line port with a button on their phone it will work. They describe it as a dry port where they press the button on their phone when they want to answer a call or make a call and that button is directly programmed to the line port even though no line is really on the port."

The porpose of this button is for using a headset without lifting the reciever.

Has anyone done this? Any help is greatly appreciated.

That sounds a little sketchy to me.. Are they talknig about running a cable for just the headset to the switch and running it into the line port? Normally when we put in a headset(depending on the type), I run them into the Aux port on the bottom of the phone. Most have a flash-hook button. Either on a base unit that is "between" the headset and the phone, or on a belt clip radio unit for the wireless Avaya headsets. Maybe a little more clarification... Thanks,

Matt Wray

They used to do this on Spirit systems. Program an extra line key on the Partner phone to a line port that doesn't even exsist or have dial tone on it. Plug in the headset through the handset cord connector, and take the handset off hook, and leave it off hook.

When you are not on a call, press the line key for the phantom line, and when you want to take a call, press the appropiate line key.

The problem is, your extension is always off hook. Yes, your phone still rings (although at a lower volume), but anyone with an auto-intercom button for you will always see you in use.

The MUCH better solution is to use a Partner Base for the headset, plugged into the Aux port on the bottom of the phone. Handset stays in the cradle, you press the button on the base, and dial from the Partner phone.

You could also use one of those cheep headset phones from Target or Wal-Mart, but the sound quality isn't so good.

Tommy,

Great response............now it is beginning to sink in. Can you tell me the steps to add a phantom line @ 2 different phones? Your help is greatly appreciated on this matter.

thanks again

You would put a different phantom line on each extension that is going to use a headset this way. I would probably use the highest numbered line available on the particular processor, i.e., Line-24 on an ACS, for the first one I set up, then work down from there.

You use program #301 to assign individual lines to extensions.

From Ext. 10 or 11
FEATURE 00
LEFT Intercom Twice
#301-XX-NN-3 (Where XX is the Extension Number, and NN is the Line Number)
After you press the "3", you then press the button you want the line to appear on.

Back to #301 for another extension.
FEATURE 00 when you're done.

Tommy,

I went to the customer's location and followed your instruction and everything worked great! You sure know you stuff, and you have helped me greatly. Thanks again
