Hi people,
At a customer site, an hdisk0 failed. rootvg was stretched on hdisk0 and hdisk1, and customers do not have a backup. hdisk1 and hdisk0 are not mirrored. There is no system backup.
Now the machine is without one disk, and cannot boot.
When booting from install media, and trying to access rootvg, importvg failed, and it was unable to mount / and /usr filesystems.
fsck /dev/hd2 gives:
filesystem helper: Invalid argument.

A new disk was ordered, and I now plan to install AIX 4.3.3.0 (as previous) on it. My question is, how to see the old data (on hdisk1) from the new AIX? I am afraid that importvg -y won't work.

You will not be able to import the rootvg due to it being stripped or extended across HDISK0 and HDISK1. You can however check on google for Data Recovery companies that can recover the HDISK from the failure. I think it is worth the cost if you have no backup and there is important info on those disks.

If they only had the OS on rootvg then you should be able to just reinstall the OS and go from there.

Guess that shows why there should be backups and rootvg should be mirrored.

I thought that there were some low level commands (that work with the odm) that can do it, but, I still do not have the knowledge to edit the odm, and manualy the VGDA and other descriptors ;)))
I have checked for data recovery firms, and I will recommend them to the customer.
I'll try importvg anyway, but I do not raise great expectations on it.

Regards.
