we have old ibm machine RS 6000 58H. 13 years old.
One of the disc in rootVG crashed now i would like to boot it to get some data from other disc's. It is posible to boot it in maintanence mode. I tried but i can't.
Any sugestions

What AIX level do you have?

how many disks in rootvg?

Is rootvg mirrored?

how about backup? Do you have mksysb backup for the rootvg?

Khalid

4.3.?
5 disks in rootvg no mirror backup exists but i can't boot from tape drive but i think the tape is bad becouse it is 8 years old :) i don't know what the admin was thinking :).

yeah what LED number are you getting when this happens?

No errors just 223 on the machine display.
I can boot it in the service mode from cd but i don't get maintanance

LEDcode 223 means it can't find a valid boot device.

On those old machines you also got an alternating LEDcode 223/229 if the SCSI bus was not correctly terminated. So maybe check SCSI cables and/or terminators first.

In service mode boot, what CD are you booting from?

Also you can to try an put the remaining disks in another server and try to force-import the rootvg as another VG "oldroot" or sth. - it will complain about duplicate LV names and about a missing disk but you might still get at your data. You might need to create a new jfslog though, because I fear that the jfslog was also on the crashed disk and is well and truly dead by now...
