I am trying to rescue the data on a 2.5 hard drive.
(See Video Below)

1) I have a 100GB 2.5 hard drive that I installed it in a Mad Dog external UBS enclosure.
2) When I plug it in, I am prompted to initialize the disk and it does not show up in My Computer.
3) However, on my Macintosh, I have a program called Data Rescue II and on that app, it does shows up under the list of drives, but it won't recover anything. It freezes on Block 0.

I really need to know my options before I do something stupid.

Should I try a PC repair program?
Should I buy the exact same HDD and swap the platters?
Throw it in the freezer? (lol)

Watch the video and please tell me what you think.

Thanks,
Rick

Sounds like the drive is fried. You could try a repair program. You might/might not get anything off of it.

As far as swapping platters, do you have a clean room? That is, 100% free of dust and any airborne particles? Swapping the platters may not work. Depending on whether or not the electronics are any good inside the drive.

Here's a lesson for you: BACKUP YOUR IMPORTANT FILES/DATA TO CD/DVD/TAPE/ETC.

It's to late for a Clean Room, did you see the Video. Why in the world did you open it.

This is a Signature and not part of the answer, it appears on every reply.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

R.I.P. your hard drive. Even if you DID get it to function doubtful it would stay working long enough to recover data from it. Opening a hard drive is NEVER a good idea, unless you have a dead drive and just want to take a look inside.

The dust in the air in your non-clean room has already settled in the drive, it's scrap.

Being a L337 H4X0R means you know how sensitive the insides of a hard drive are and respect the piece of equipment. I'm surprised you didn't try moving the actuator arm back & forth to see if you could read the data! Sorry but at least this is hopefully a lesson for you.

Once again just to get the point across: NEVER! open a drive unless you do it in a clean room. If it was having trouble getting recognized i would attempted to change the controller card first, not open it to see what it was doing.

Your only chance now is a specialized recovery service which will cost you mucho $$$, if they even want to give it a try.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

Well, hopefully it wasn't an expensive lesson - referring to the "worth" of the data. [smarty]

Quality.....Oh you were serious when you said you wanted to get the data back.

Yeah...Fried as a really crispy chip....probably more fried than that even.

Sorry to be unhelpful but it is very funny.

I suppose you can't really blame a newbie for disassembling a drive...all the pictures of drives they use for sales purposes all show the drives WITHOUT the cover...why I'll never know.

Hopefully s/he knows better now.

It does wonders for the sales of replacement hard drives! [thumbsup2]

I was thinking about the same thing last night when I saw an article in the paper for a 500Gb drive with no top.

Even on the top of the drive it only voids the warranty if the cover is removed, nothing about saying "Open this cover and it will stuff your drive"

Still funny though.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who has wondered about the "cover off" pictures of hard drives. Sure, they all look the same from the outside, but they also all look the same from the INSIDE. Can you imagine if this tactic was employed by other vendors? Like a router showing the circuit board, a monitor showing the bezel & case removed, a laptop with the shell removed?

WHY on earth this is standard practice is anyone's guess...but as Roger says this is a good way to get replacement drives sold![smile]
