Hello again, everyone:
I am working on a friend's Dell Optiplex loaded w/Win2kPro. For no apparent reason, the machine will not boot. The Dell splash screen with it's white progress bar displays, but the screen then goes blank with no beeps (I gather POST never completely runs). I ran a basic virus scan from a Norton AV CDROM - no viruses detected. I booted from a Win98 boot floppy, but, because the drive is NTFS, the partition was not detected. I booted from a Win2K CDROM and ran the repair console (no ERD available) and ran FIXMBR. Upon the next attempt at boot, I was advised that the MBR was corrupted or non-existant. I then installed and formatted (NTFS) a spare Western Digital HDD and installed Win2K on it. I then physically uninstalled and reinstalled the problem HDD as a slave (performing cold boots at every step and jupering the HDDs properly), but when I went to explore the problem drive (E, I was advised that "E:\ is not accessible. The wrong diskette is in the drive. Insert (Volume Serial Number into drive E:\". I then ran Powermax on the problem drive and it passed. It should be noted that, in Disk Manager, there is no file system displaed for E:, though NTFS is displayed for the partitions on the functioning HDD. Is the problem drive toast? My thanks to all in advance for any input/advice.
