OK:
My computer is a Celeron 433 on an Asus B2B-F MB.
The HDD (10gig Fujitsu) began showing bad sectors on the disk, so I did what I could to get around them. When I rebooted the computer reported a boot disk failure.

Fine, I bought a new WD 40gig and tried to install it.
It won't show up in the BIOS although the install software sees it on the IDE bus.

I've tried stand alone and master settings and reset the bios with really no tangible results. Any Suggestions, I have a new MOBO at the ready......

?? When you turn your computer on, and your viewing the cmos settings... do you see the drive? I don't understand what you mean by the install software.. =(

If you do see it in the bios, then you have to set the drive as a primary partition ( try using fdisk.exe) so you could boot off it, then format it (format <drive> /s) , and then install windows.

or just boot off the CD.

Is the install software your talking about your Operating system installation?

You may need to update your BIOS to see the new drive. I had to update an Asus P2B to see 45 gigs a couple years ago.

Are you using the correct interface cabling? All ATA-66 capable drives and upwards should use an 80 wire IDE conductor rather than a 40 wire one (e.g this can cause UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME STOP error on Windows XP booting from a hard disk on a wrong graded cable) but can also cause detction issues on the IDE bus. If your system hangs while the CMOS scans the IDE bus for connected devices it could be because the BIOS does not support the cylinder boundary which 40gb crosses. It could also be a fault with INT 19 (boot loader) service, both issues are normally resolved with a BIOS update. You should try Lifeguard Tools from the hardware OEMs website to test the physical mechanics of the drive if possible (assuming it can be detected either correctly or incorrectly).

On older motherboards they sometimes had a utility to set up the hard drive that looked at the hard drive and tried to set the correct settings for the number of heads and cylinders, etc. Of course you have to see it first. Might try running that.

If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

Thanks Guys!!

I put a newer MOBO in and the drive was detected and is running 98 fine on a 2 gig partition. I'll create a new boot floppy with FDISK on it and repartition it tonight.
