HDD grinding noise depending on configuration

Hello,

I wonder if anyone can help me with this problem:

I have just ordered a Seagate Barracuda ST3200822A HDD to replace my ageing Maxtor. I started with both drives connected and copied my 20gb of data to the Seagate. I then removed the Maxtor, put the Seagate in the HDD bay and installed XP.

The Seagate then started making very loud grinding noises during disk access. I did not remember this noise during the data transfer described above, and I ran the above procedure again to make sure. I confirmed that when booting off the Maxtor and transferring 20gb of files to the Seagate there is no grinding noise. I removed the Maxtor and installed XP on the Seagate again, and the noise returned.

I am not sure if this is a related issue, but I cannot boot the Seagate off the Master (black) ATA connector, regardless of the jumper setting.

I am not sure if my Seagate drive is faulty because when booting off the Maxtor the Seagate makes no noise.

Grinding noise that's made by a HD is bad news no matter when it occurs. RMA it for a replacement.

The fact that the drive works fine in one situation and not another makes me wonder about jumper settings. Some drives have different settings for if they are the only drive on the system, different one if its also same make, different it its a different make, and so on.
Maybe double check jumpers at the h drive mfgr website.

Are you physically changing the drive mounting during all this? Could the drive be mounted too tight to the cage and be transferring normal bearing noise (or the mounting screws too long)? If you don't mount the drive, is the noise still there?

I had a similar problem with grinding noises. The best thing to do is DO NOT RUN IT. It'll only cause more damage. I ended up sending my drive to Gillware.com to get the data off of my drive. The drive itself was toasted. I would at least check these guys out. Give them a call and they can explain to you, much better than I could, on what to do.
