i have an HDD which i am using for sometime now. just recently, i've formatted my HDDs, so i could install windows ME. formatting of my first HDD was successfull, but not on my second HDD. everytime i try to format it, there's a message appearing that there is "insufficient memory (or something like that)." At first, the formatting seems to be working, but when the formatting reaches 40% already, the message (insufficient memory) already appears. when i've tried reformatting, it only reaches 4% and the message appeared again. i can't go beyond the 4% level now because the 'error message' appears right away. could anyone please help me with this one?

If you cannot format it from the dos prompt got to the cmos and do a low-level format found under hdd tab
(dont forget, you must partition and reformat your hdd after performing low-level format)

A command in DOS that usually worked from a boot floppy was: A:\format d: /u [or A:\format /u D:]
The /u meant to do an unconditional format, which did not save the files necessary for undoing the formatting, therefore it didn't have to read anything into memory.

I tried looking at the cmos but the low-level format option is nowehere to be found.
My problem right now is that, when my PC boots, it can recognize my HDD (the one I want to format), but when I click the "My Computer" icon, my HDD (D drive) is not available. Maybe it's because I deleted the DOS partition already. What's worse, everytime I try to make a new partition, "verifying disk integrity" can't go past 2%. After going to 2%, it just goes back at 0% and then goes back at 0% again upon reaching 2%.
I also downloaded a low-level formatter to see if it can do the task but I always get the "Read Verify Command Failure, No ID Found" error message.

Most IDE/EIDE drives no longer need to be low-level formatted.
I'd boot to a floppy [Win98], run fdisk, #5 on the drive menu to change to the second drive, and check the partition [drives can be numbered 1 and 2 or 0 and 1, the second drive will always be the larger number]. The way the BIOS 'sees' the drive is different than the way Windows sees it. If there is no partition, Windows does not know about it. If there is a partition, Windows can then format it. Windows can't partition the drive [except maybe during the original installation].

how then can i make a partition on the drive when everytime i try to make a new partition "verifying disk integrity" can't go past 2%? or if all else fails, if i can't get my hdd working, can i at least recover any files remaining on it?
