I added an old Maxtor 10GB hdd to my Win2K system just for downloading files. Recently, I left some files downloading overnight (Using WinMX) and the next day windows could not read the drive. In properties it showed 100% used, but chkdsk claimed it was not formatted. I used getdataback to recover about 90% of the files. The directory into which I had been downloading, however; seems to have been ERASED. gdb found the folder, but no files in it. The drive may have filled up 100% with the downloads. Could that have caused the following symptoms? Or is something strange going on?

After copying the files to backup on the large primary disk, I tried to rebuild FAT because some programs had been installed on the 2nd drive and some files were not found by gdb. So I booted with hard disk mechanic 2000. hdm2000 found the disk and claimed to rebuild it, however when it was done it reported the disk having a volume serial number of "DADA-BABA" (The disk came out of an old COmpaq PC I had bought used, so it's possible, if a little strange) and only 2 files. One file of 10GB, named er.hl_ There were also some strange wingding type characters that looked like angle brackets and a little face: | . . |

After that, gdb would no longer find most of the files, only scattered fragments in several FAT16 and FAT32 file systems, so I gave up and reformatted and reinstalled the clobbered programs. Anybody ever see such a thing? Is this a strange new virus at work or just Maxtor coruption? HDM2000 did find some bad sectors. Now that I have reformatted NTFS and run chkdisk from disk properties, are the bad sectors "bad-tracked"? Is there a log of what chkdsk does to a drive?
