Ok, just so we can skip over the lame stuff, I know lots about computers. Moving on...Today I was running Norton and it crashed my computer about half way thru. I rebooted and it said "Bad system or boot disk.." or whatever, the thing it says when you leave in a floppy, only the error was about my harddrive. So I put in the configuration builder (it's a toshiba laptop) and booted into dos. I did a dir on c: and got *nothing*. I ran scandisk from there and it said it found 5 gigs (all my stuff) of bad files or dir's that it wants to put into the file001.chk thing. How do I get my stuff back. It's all there, but I think norton had it all open or something and all the headers are bad, or something. Could you please help me? thanks so much.

Good luck, Ben. About two weeks ago, I had a very similar experience. My disk was divided into 14 partitions (C through P). In a matter of seconds, M through P were gone, and nearly all the files had disappeared from the remaining partitions. I spent 2 days and 1 night (ALL night) trying to revive SOMETHING--and I know lots about computers, too. Finally, I had to fdisk and reformat. I lost everything.

The only conclusion was that some kind of virus had slipped through my defenses, even though I ran both Norton and AVG--before absolutely everything slipped away--and they found nothing.

I wish I were able to tell you how I saved my HD. We'd both be much happier right now. [cry]
