my hdd just seems to make a swishing noise and when ive tried using dos programs to correct any corrupt sectors, it fails to do so.

ive tried deleting partitions and recreating them and formatting etc, but nothing is working..just makes a swishing noise and does fcuk all. :
any thoughts ?

Assuming you do fdisk and create a partition, what error messages do you get, if any?
Once fdisk is complete, do you reboot and use fdisk again to see what it has created? Has it?
You might also want to go to the manufacturer's site and get a diagnostic program and use it. Tells you lots of interesting stuff.

well i can get it to make a partition, altho it takes much longer than usual.. coz it makes all these dodgy accessing noises, and then when i try and format it, it just freezes making that accessing noise at around 20% (after much effort getting to 20%)

it kind of makes three accessing noises continously, pauses, then another three, pauses.. etc etc.

Your drive is rapidly giving up the ghost.
Get the diagnostics and run them. They will tell you what the problem is.

well i have just ran the diagnostics from the dos program supplied on (my suppliers support webpage for the hdd i use) and it says device failure, when trying to correct the corrupt sectors. i guess this means its broken ?
