Hdd askes for new fornat

Worked fine 2 days ago. Next day I woke it from 'sleep' and it didn't recognize 'f' hdd. Shut down and checked connections. Booted Vista and it ran 'chkdisk'. When finished it gave me an error window(attached). If I follow instructions and reformat won't I lose all my data? Why did it lose it's format? How do I recover data since it isn't formatted and computer dosn't recognize it? I'm afraid to hit format button, should I?

If you want your data don't I repeat DO NOT hit the format button.

You might want to use a Data Recovery application such as GetDataBack from runtime.org.

You can trey their trial version to see if it can recover the files.

After that you can format the hard drive and copy the recovered files back onto it.

After that you can format the hard drive and copy the recovered files back onto it.

Just to make sure you understand what vacunita is saying. Once you run the software, and it appears to recover the files, MAKE SURE you recover/copy the files to a different hard drive BEFORE running the format.

Another application that does an in place Partition recovery - which should take care of any format problems, I suppose, is Active Partition Recovery]. I can verify that I've recovered a RAID ARRAY Partition on at least one occasion with this software. It's GREAT!

If you want to recover the partition to an Image file on your other hard drive (if I remember correctly, that's how it works), that method is free. If you want to recover the partition (Probably that 2nd hard drive of yours, for instance), you can get the $39 version, and install it in Windows, and run it. Of course, if you want to be able to use that for system recovery in case Windows ever goes out on you, that one is $79. I'd say the $39 is well worth it if you don't want to mess with moving the data, then formatting.

Whatever you do, recover whatever data possible before formatting.
