I am trying to install XP Pro on my Western Digital 40GB harddrive. For some reason, it will install it with a FAT partition only. If I try with NTFS, it gives me a system error and tells me I have to try another partition. I have tried it with two other hard drives and I am not sure why it doesn't want me to have a NTFS partition.

Different steps for different situations now

1: When I try to format using NTFS (quick or regular), it tells me that it is not able to install XP on that partition and I will have to use another one.
2: If I use the same partition for FAT32 it will go through the process of copying files, but after the machine reboots, it will give me various Blue Screen of Death messages.

After messing with it for a couple of hours yesterday, I believe I determined it wasn't a hard drive issue after all, so I'm thinking it might be something with the motherboard.

memory issue possibly
