Hey,

I brought a seagate 8.4GB HD and it is wrapped around a leather jacket. Should I remove this jacket or leave it on when I put it in my machine? Also I have an existing HD in my machine which I am to make slave, the problem is that the two hard-disks will then be very close together, is this OK?

Thanks,
karmafree.

More and more drives are coming with dust/static type protection and is designed to be left on.
Try if possible to leave a gap (even if it's just a few mm)
between the drives to allow circulation, but it's unlikely to cause problems if there's not.
Have a rethink about case cooling, I don't know your system specs?? but it's always good to have plenty of turnover of air to keep things cool.
Depending on case design it maybe possible to fit a hard drive bay cooler (again this probably won't be necessary)
Just depends on what other hardware you have warming up the system?? Martin

Hey,

Thanks for the reply.
My system is a Intel P1 Socket 7 233MMX with 128MB EDO RAM, the CPU has a heatsink and fan and the case also has a fan; running Win2000. The hard-disks are a couple of mm apart; any further than the IDE cable won't be able to connect one of the hard-disks as they both share the cable. Is that OK?
Else what would be the symptoms of hard-disk faliure due to heat? I've had the system on for a day and everything is stable. The hard-disk with the jacket is a:
"Seagate ST38410A (8.4GB) 3 1/2" 5400 RPM Ultra ATA/66 A21"
Do I take the jacket off this one?
It's second hand and I've no documentation.

Thanks,
karmafree.

No! leave it's jacket on.
It maybe that you read lots of posts with people talking about Athlon 1.4's etc the processor alone producing over 70watts of heat!!!!!!!!!!! unclocked, and with fast 7,200rpm drives, g/force 3's active fans etc etc etc!!
For these modern day Ferrari's heat is a real problem and one that HAS to be tackled if you want a stable system. For your P1 233MX on the other hand HEAT! is just not an issue!! you already have OVERKILL by having an active CPU cooler and case fan, many of these systems originally didn't have any fans in them at all bar the PSU, so you have plenty already.
Having both the Hard drives on one ribbon as Master/Slave is OK, I suspect that your drives are fairly similar? both ATA33 or 66? so it's not like putting a very fast drive (ata 100) with a slow ATA33.
Better this way than putting either with a slow Rom device. Vote if you found this post helpful please!!
