HD issue?

i recently built a new pc and have encountered a problem that i hope someone here might be able to clear up for me

my system is locking up when i am moving large files and instaling large programes always have to hard boot, i havnt been able to instale much of anything on my system other then windows becouse of this.

it has also locked up when xp is loading and locked up once when instaling windows tho this doesnt happen as often.

I am thinking there is somthing wrong with the hard drive but would like some more advice as to other posable causes or conformation b4 i RMA the drive

seems problem with hard drive to me .. Long time back (really long ) I bought a 40GB drive and face same problem as yours .. I replace two 40gb drives, still same problem persisted ... then i found out tat my mobo's recommended hdd is 30gb only ... I dont think this shd the prob wid u ..

Locking up is often a hardware issue - not usually hard drive. Also often driver issue.

Can easily check hard drive - download diagnostic from manufacturer's site.

Did XP install ok originally? If no - ie, you had to nurse it, then you have a hardware issue of some kind - memory would be my first suspect - but will need to eliminate items by removing where possible, replacing with known good where possible. If your RAM is > 1 stick, try each on its own.

If yes, when did problem start - what have you installed (software/hardware) since initial load?

first install of windows did go ok i installed some driver and other miner programs then began to transfer about 10G of files from my other comp using a usb drive. i walked away as it did its thing just to come back to a locked pc with the progress bar at about 20%. i thought at first it might have been the usb untell i tryed to install a few games from the cd rom drive all would couse a lock up at around 20-40% complet.

i formated and installed xp again got the lock up during install here, after getting it going again same results as above...

will load and run programs from my usb drive ok tho... i do however get the same lockups when i try to install programs to the usb drive...

ill try the memroy one at a time c how that goes as for other hard drives i dont have any other sata drive to try, the board does have an IDE connection but drives i connect there dont seem to be bootable (or at least to my knowldge)get an NTLDR is missing error

any more thoughts..

Run memory test

Run HDD diagnostic test

If not customer made PC - see if there are diagnostics either on-board or downloadable from manufacturer. Run quick test and then extended test.

Update all drivers to the latest versions

Try doing the copy in safe mode to see if it makes any difference.

found the problem was in the memory
