hi Folks. I'm setting up my new comp and have hit a serious wall. I have a 80 IBM HD on my second IDE and it's very non-cooperative. The drive came from my older comp and had files on it. When I installed it on my new system the HD would not initialize. It was detected in the bios and the device manager showed it as working properly.

I repartitioned and reformatted the drive. Formatting was a bit of a struggle since it would fail and go to a blue screen. Eventually I did manage to get the HD formatted. However, the next time I rebooted the system the disk did not initialize again.

Not sure what is causing it, but if anyone has any insight I would appreciate it. The HD seems to initialize if partitioned but not formatted. Thanks.

Basic System Info
AMD Athlon 64 3500+
Asus A8N-SLI mobo
1 gig DDR400
Gigabyte 6800GT
Win XP Pro current to SP2

what do you mean by initialize?

have you run manufacturer's diagnostic utility against the drive (think its on hitachi site now for IBM drives)?

Number13,

"The drive came from my older comp...."

Did you ever have Drive Overlay on this drive? ie:EZ-Bios

Hi folks. I installed the latest nForce4 SLI drivers and I managed to get the HDD partitioned and formatted. I can save to the drive but now when I try to access the drive (through Windows Explorer or whatever) I get a Machine_Check_Exception with the following stop message:

Stop: 0x0000009C (0x00000004, 0x80545FF0, 0xB2000000, 0x00070F0F[/color red]

I guess this is some type of hardware conflict specific to this HDD since it only occurs when using it.

My DVD drive on the same IDE channel doesn't work properly either right now. The drive shows as properly installed but any disk installed seems to hang wothout being accessed. NOt sure if the two issues are related.

I'm going to try flashing my BIOS but I'm at a loss as to whatelse to try. Any help is appreciated. :)

Hi Wolluf. I downloaded the Drive Fitness Test from Hitachi and will give it a try. Thanks!
