is there such a virus that destroys a hd to the extent that it cannot be detected even by the bios? i have several HDs with similar symptoms, others are relatively new and did not show symptoms that its retirable. is there a way it can be fixed? format & fdisk are not applicable even disk managers are not capable since bios cant detect its presence.

The peer-to-peer folks swear there is a virus that rewrites the NVRAM code on an IDE hard disk, and the drive is unrecoverable.

But you issue sounds more like a bad IDE controller, and/or bad cables.

*Whistles* a virus that rewrote the NVRAM would be disasterous, luckily I've never heard of such a thing. The drive would be recoverable by advanced methods, since if the NVRAM was destroyed, it could easily be restored with the help of a manufacturer and somebody with some advanced tools. (The NVRAM is the Non-Volatile Random Access Memory, where on the onboard controller for the drive it stores all of its settings) The actual data written on to the drive wouldn't have been modified by this.

could be an NVRAM problem because i have tried this on a different cpu as master, slave to eliminate ide controller, data cabe problem even with mnufacturer's disk manager. bios wont detect the hard disk from the start. is there a fix for the NVRAM problem?

Have you tried the manufacturer's diagnostic programs? They do a good job of tracing down problems.
