I have a PC with 3 sata HDs. The main Maxtor drive (11 months old) stopped working, message 'reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media'. The other 2 HDs are working OK.
The Maxtor HD is detected in BIOS and Device manager but not in My Computer or Disk Managment, I have checked and swapped the HD connections .Powermax and Seatools cant detect HD. I have disconnected the 2 other HDs but win xp disc cant find a partition to load windows onto.
I have tried the'Ultimate Boot' CD and Spinrite.
Is there anything else to try.

Sounds like your Maxtor drive is gone, the bios will see it, but that is all. Will the drive spin up?

Is it under warranty? If it is under warranty the best you can hope for is a replacement. Should you need the data on it, send it out for recovery, expensive though.

Good luck

I tend to agree with Xit there, in that the drive is probably a goner...

we had nothing but problems with Seagate and Maxtor drives in the past year or so, 7 of 10 developed a problem and some just quit out right...

two of those we where able to salvage, with a Firmware update but the other five where sent back for replacements...
