I have a 12" Powerbook HD from a client (Hitachi Travelstar 60GB) which crashed. Of course he had no backup. Instead of using file vault on the one folder he needed to protect because of HIPPA regulations he file vaulted his entire Home folder.
After a month I have been able to get the drive to mount and rescue all files outside the home folder.
On a pc with mac drive you can see the .firstlastname invisible file. It is around 8GB. Trying to copy it doesn't work.
Any suggestions for rescuing the filevault?

Google for and download Onyx, a free Mac utility that can easily turn on/off hidden file visibility on the Mac so you don't need to view the drive on Windows.

Aside from that, I can't offer much advice on FileVault recovery. There's plenty of google-able goodness online about FileVault recovery (or at least attempts at recovery).

THanks....thats a start...I told it may take a few weeks to get the data if possible at all.

I may have been wrong about Onyx. Although might do it as well and is a great tool to have.

The freeware I used was TinkerTool. That allows you to switch file visibility easily.

Onyx allowed me to turn to see the files at the root but so far the .uername.sparseimage isn't there. I am using Data rescue to check the drive and I did get Disk Warrior to see the image one time.

Okay, I finally did it...I did get the sparseimage to mount on my mac (usb drive enclosure). It kept hanging so I ended up copying image to my firewire external drive from the pc using mac drive and onyx. From there I copied the files to DVDs.
