trying to recover pwd from my cisco 2514 router as i'm VERY much a beginner.
i can login through hyperterminal running xp pro but i havn't got the password to login to privilige mode. i have read the following link but find it confusing.
i have tried sending a break sequence using ctrl & break but i get a reply system bootstarp, version 5.2(8a) etc..Abort at 0x10205AC instead of i think something different.
do i even need to do this? as i can access exec mode.
is there an alternative?
whoa..

Need to perform the password recovery per the link you posted. If you cannot get cntrl-brk to interrupt the boot process then you need to simulate the break sequence as follows:
How to Simulate a Break Key Sequence
This is useful if your terminal emulator does not support the break key, or if a bug does not allow it to send the correct signal (the hyperterminal under Windows NT used to suffer from this behavior):

Connect to the router with these terminal settings:

1200 baud rate

No parity

8 data bits

1 stop bit

No flow control

You no longer see any output on your screen. This is normal.

Power cycle (switch off and then on) the router and press the spacebar for 10-15 seconds. This generates a signal similar to the break sequence.

Disconnect your terminal, and reconnect with a 9600 baud rate. You are now in ROM Monitor mode.

If all the preceeding methods have failed to properly send a break, retry the procedures from a different terminal or PC platform.
