hello. i have a computer running win xp pro on an Athlon Thunderbird slot a processor running at 700 Mhz. I am trying to install directx 9.0 but i keep getting an error right at the end telling me that the cpu is not supported. how do i work around this without buying a new CPU? any ideas or suggestions will be very helpful. im at a wits end here!!

This is just a stab in the dark but I would try updating the drivers for everything you possibly can - your CPU, your motherboard, your graphics card, the lot. Then download the latest version of DirectX 9.0c and try again.

The system requirements for DirectX only mention the operating system, not the CPU, so it should work.

ghrark,
Go to Start -> Run and type dxdiag. Click OK.

It will launch the DirectX diagnostic tool. Here you can see what version you are currently running. If you have Windows XP Service Pack 2 or 3, then you already have DirectX 9.0c installed.

That might the real issue here, and not that your CPU isn't supported. In fact, it shouldn't be telling you that because all DirectX versions are backwards compatible. In other words, DirectX 9 can execute DirectX 7 and 8 commands using emulation. It's a little slower than just having 7 or 8 installed, but it will still work.
