I have one user that is trying to access a secure web site that required a login.
When she logs in the Website a new blank IE window opens (maximized) and nothing happens...I deleted the cookies, offline file etc. She is running windows 2000 with IE 6 with all the updates.
Help!!!

Thank you,

Nick

First and easiest potential fix. Make sure that the date setting is correct on her pc.
Second, firewall software is notorious for causing this. Disable any such software and try to hit the site as a test.
Post back if no joy...

The date is fine..We have a FW on our network but it's not the issue because other users can log into this website .
Also , I asked the same user to logon another computer with her pass/login and try the website and it works so it has to be something localy on het computer...

Thanx for the reply

Ooops...posted right on top you. It's probably the encryption on that machine.

Sorry...that didn't fix the problem.
I should add that this user was able to access the website last week , nothing has changed since but she can't right now.
She is running win2k with sp3 , IE6 128bit .

Any suggestions??

OK, I see that you've:

- cleared cookies, cache
- made sure there weren't any local firewalls on the pc
- tested on another pc on the same network

Now, try this:

1) Go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Privacy. Click the Advanced button. Tick the options for "Override automatic cookie handling..." and "Always allow session cookies...". Also, make sure first and third party cookies are accepted.

2) Go to "Help -> About Internet Explorer" and make sure that cipher strength says 128-bit.

3) Go to When you get there, click the gold emblem in the lower-right that says Verisign Secure Site. This will launch a separate window. Make sure the "certificate status" says VALID. That will tell you if something is wrong with SSL.

Hopefully, you'll be able to determine where the problem is coming from. If the above doesn't help, then compare settings between the working pc's and this one. Something must be different.

Cdogg,

Thank you for the advice but it still doesnt work.
When I goto verisign it opens a new window but hangs...Nothing happans and I have to kill the explorer .
The cipher strength says 128-bit and I enabled the cookies.
I am able to login to this website from my computer and we have the same settings...

Nick,
Actually, we're getting somewhere. Because the window hangs, I'm guessing it will eventually time out and give you "Page cannot be displayed" or "Cannot find server".

In either case, the problem has to be either the browser or a piece of software running in the background that's blocking it.

One last attempt on the browser:

1) Tools -> Int Options -> Security. Make sure Internet is highlighted at the top. Down below, the security level should be MEDIUM. If it says anything else, click "Default Level" to change it to Medium and hit apply.

2) On the Connections tab, click Lan Settings at the bottom. In the next window, everything should be unchecked (especially "automatically detect settings"). Hit OK then Apply.

3) Go to the Advanced tab. Scroll to the bottom and make sure SSL 2.0 and 3.0 are both checked. Hit OK.

If all that still doesn't help, make sure SP1 has been installed for IE6 and/or reinstall it. Still stuck? Then I'm convinced that some port or the protocol is being blocked intentionally by software running on the pc, or from a setting somewhere.

In a pinch, this will sometimes provide the fix:
Via Windows Explorer, enable your pc to see hidden files. Look for a file called HOSTS. Open Hosts (Notepad, whatever) and delete any reference within to your problem site(s).

Thanx but the problem is not solved yet...
I'm just D/L the full IE6 with SP1 and I'll try to install it on her computer.
I'll let you know if it helped.

"She is running windows 2000 with IE 6 with all the updates."

I thought from your first post that this was already done....????

I installed a custom IE6 on her computer a few months ago.
Then I updated her machine with "windows update" got the SP3 for win2k and the rest for IE6.
Since I'm out of option I am D/L the full IE6 with SP1 and will try to reinstall it.
It looks like something is corrupted with the SSL on her machine.

i know you probably checked it but like carrr posted before about the date make sure the TIME is correct also. you just said that the date was correct in your reply i am just makeing sure you checked the time. if the time is off enough it will do the same. "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

Hi all , Problem solved!!

I used the IEAK6 and built a new full version of IE , reinstalled it on the user's computer and it works fine now!!
I have no Idea what was wrong with the other version I had but when I built this one I choose a full install.

Thank you all for your help

Glad to hear it! Looks like it was an SSL problem after all...
