I'm trying to publish an application that launches Notes. For the first user, it works fine, but the second that tries to launch Notes gets this error message: "You cannot use the Administrator program while the Domino Server is running. Either shut down the Domino Server or choose the icon labeled Lotus Notes instead".
I have Notes Client install on Citrix Server and Domino Server on another Windows 2000 Server.
Is this a problem with Lotus Notes where it can't run more than one instance at the same time?
Has anyone seen this problem?

Thanks you in advance.

The same user cannot run more than one instance of Notes. If a user tries to run it more than once you get this error message. Are these two different users that you are trying to connect as? If these are two different users then there is something wrong with the installation. Different users are maybee using the same files when they really should be separate for each user. I don't know which version of Notes you are using but maybe this link to Citrix knowledgebase regarding installation of Notes 4.6 could be of some help in troubleshooting this.

Hope this helps

Hi Hof,
Thanks for the quick reply.
To answer your question, yes I've two different users.
I'm using notes client 5.0.1.
I went thru the steps from the link you provided. The setup menu is different. Do you know of any document related to installing notes client 5.0 on a Citrix Server?

OK, You can find an Application Compatibility script for Notes 5 and a lot of other Citrix info on the Citrix Hardcore User page:

I also found this information from IBM on how to install Notes R5 in Terminal Services:

1. Log on to the server as Administrator and ensure no users are currently
accessing the server.
2. In Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
3. Click Add New Programs.
4. Click CD or Floppy.
5. Click Next.
6. Run the Lotus Notes 5 install program setup.exe from the CD-ROM.
7. Click Next to continue on the first Notes install screen.
8. Click Yes to accept the Notes licensing agreement.
9. Enter the company name in the appropriate fields. Do not enter a user’s name in either field as data entered here will be seen by all users.
10.Click the check box Shared install.
11.Enter the destination folder as D:\APPS\Lotus\Notes.
12.Notes installation will now copy files to the hard drive.
13.Click Finish when completed.
14. Create a folder on the server called r5clienttemplate. Share the folder using the same name for the share and set Permissions to give Read access to everyone.
15. Connect the standard user’s home letter to this share. Enter the command:
NET USE U: \\AUTS03\R5CLIENTTEMPLATE
for example.
16. Run the D:\APPS\Lotus\Notes\setup.exe Notes installation program.
17. Click Next to continue on the first Notes install screen.
18. Click Yes to accept licensing of Notes.
19. Click Next to accept the existing Company name field.
20. Change the destination folder from C:\Lotus\Notes\Data to H:\Lotus\Notes\Data and click Next, where H: is the letter of all users’ home drive.
21.Click Finish when completed. Do not launch Notes now.
22.After the program has been installed, click Finish on the Add/Remove Programs window.
23.Using Windows Explorer, cut and paste C:\WTSRV\NOTES.INI (equivalent to moving the file) to the directory H:\Lotus\Notes.
24.Create a common desktop icon for all users to run Notes:
a. From the Windows Explorer menu, select File > New > Shortcut.
b. Enter D:\APPS\Lotus\Notes\Notes.exe in the location field and click Next.
c. Enter Lotus Notes in the name field and click Finish.
25.Still in Windows Explorer, right-click on the newly created Lotus Notes shortcut.
26.Select Properties and then select the Shortcut tab.
27.Set the Start in: field to H:\Lotus\Notes.
28.Copy the contents of the r5clienttemplate directory (including the Notes folder within that folder) to each user’s home directory (or H: drive). This is a standard Lotus Notes administration task.

Hope this helps

Thanks Hof,
I'll give that a try...
I've questions for you on number #14, #15, and #28.
#14: Do they mean create folder on Citrix Server on WIN2000 or Notes Server on another WIN2000?
#15: Do they mean that everytime a user login he or she has to map that folder?
#28: Copy what contents? Following the steps, I don't see anywhere that we copy any contents to that folder. Hmm maybe I miss something.

I'm new at this and do apologize on any ignorance questions.
I really appreciate your help Hof. I have been stuck with this for a week now.
Thanks again.

Sorry for that, I just copied the information from IBM without reading it all through. In my opinion there are a few mistakes in the text.
#14: It doesn't matter where this folder is placed as long as you can access it and connect to it from the server.

#15: No it doesn't mean that they should connect to that folder everytime. This is just a temporary mapping to the same letter that the users normally have their homedrive on just to create at template and to make Notes point to the correct drive letter.

#28: This is where they mixed the whole thing up a little by using two diferent examples. The drive letter in #15 should be the same drive letter that your users normally use for their home directory (or terminal server home directory if that is separate)in this example U:. In #20 they use the example to install to H: instead. The drive letters in #15 and #20 should be the same so you create a Notes installation template pointing to the same drive letter that you users normally have their home dirctory in. When the installation is done you just copy the information in the R5clienttemplate dirctory, that is the folder Lotus with all its subfolders to every users home directory and map the users personal home directory instead of the R5clienttemplate driectory to H: (or whatever driveletter that you use for homedirectories)

I hope this explanation didn't mess things up even more for you. The main point I'm trying to make is that the drive letter in #15 and #20 should be the same. That is why you didn't see anything copied to U:, #15 should say
NET USE H:..... instead.
Hope this is of some help.

/Hof
