Having frequent Remote Desktop hangs (slowdowns)

We use remote desktop (RDP) to access a Win2K Server in another office. The client computers are WinXP Pro. The RDP connection periodically hangs for several (up to 15 or more) minutes, and then continues. Generally, I would say that the RDP connection is OK about 75%-80% of the time it is being used. In other words, for every hour using RDP, there it hangs once or twice.

During these periods when the RDP connection is hung, I have pinged the server and get good response times, indicating that the internet connection is OK.

We also have a VPN connection to the server, which does not slow down during these RDP hangs, further indicating a good internet connection.

The RDP hangs started before we installed a router-to-router VPN, so we can rule out the VPN as part of the problem.

The obvious question is why do we use RDP when a VPN is available. The answer is that we’re running Goldmine off of the server, and the response time is very slow over the VPN, but very good using RDP, at least when the RDP is working.

Has anyone else had any problems w/RDP hangs, or any thoughts about why this is happening? Is there an RDP setting we can adjust?

Thanks,

Phil

When it hangs does it hang for one connected user or all connected users?

Is there a pattern?
Examples:
Does it always happen when someone new logs in?
Does it always happen when someone prints something?

Have you?

1. Checked the server event logs? (just prior to, through and just after the hang)

2. Have you connected to the server via RDP as an ADMIN during the hang to see what process(es) are consuming large amounts of RAM or Processor?

3. Insured that unnecessary services are stopped? (Like IIS perhaps)?
