Having an activity always contain zero free float

I have been working with multiple project scheduling tools and have an issue with MS Project. In Primavera you can put a constraint on an activity to carry zero free float so it will always be smack up against it's successor. In Project you can put the start as late as possible constraint on an activity but it will then push on it's successor to eat up all of it's float. I just want the preceding activity to flow right up against the successor, and let the successor start as soon as possible so the successor can still keeps it's own total float. I'm sure there something I'm skipping over here[morning]. Thanks guys.

That capability does not appear to be available. The machine I'm using right now only has P98 so there might be something new about this in P2000+ (but I don't recall anything).

Both "Total Slack" and "Free Slack" are computed so you can't override those values.

You're correct about the behaviour of the successor task: if you change the constraint on the current task (which has float) from ASAP to ALAP then that forces the successor task to also have 0 float.

I'm curious: when do you use this particular task sequencing (it's probably going to be an obvious occurrence when you point it out to me but, right now, my little grey cells can't come up with an obvious set of tasks where I'd want to do this).

If I was doing everything perfectly I would have everything linked up and the schedule would be a masterpiece but I'm in a rush and was trying to make a couple activities do the 0 float thing. I was coming to a few situations where an activity had to be done before delivering an item and supposedly can be done at any time before then. So the activity had no predecessor(in theory). So instead of seeing the activity that doesn't have to happen for over a year hang out on the current date line I would like to have it shoot out there smack up against it's successor with out pushing the successor out any more. I was thinking it would be a last minute activity to make sure was complete before delivery.
