We are running out of space on our Notes server. There are some remote users that need to archive their mail, but because they are only dial-up, the archiving time will be very long. I was thinking of cutting a cd of their mail file, sending it to them, and having them open it up on another workspace page called "oldmail". When I tried this, Notes said I already had a mail icon on my workspace and it created a second "local" option on the mail icon. Is there a way to have the mail file on a second workspace page without creating another local location? If I unstack the icons, I can rename the "oldmail" icon and stop it from replicating, but the users will be doing this, so I wanted to minimize the steps. Thanks for any help.

Are you planning to cut the whole mail file or just a portion of it, leaving maybe one month's worth of mail on the server-based replica? If it's the latter option, just renaming the "oldmail" icon won't prevent it from replicating with the server-based mail file if the user chooses to do so. Replication depends on the Replica ID of a file in order to go through. To prevent accidental replication of an archive, I'd recommend creating a **copy** (non-replica) of the mail file on the cdrom, rather than a replica. This way, it's an archive which the user can make any modifications to, without having to worry about messing up the "live" mail file on the server because of accidental replication. In addition, if the user replicates the 2 files after the deletion stubs are removed from the server, it'll put back the old emails onto the server.

If you are planning to delete the archived period of the mails from the server-based replica after cutting it on a cdrom, as opposed to allowing the user to delete them himself, you'll need to warn him that the next time he replicates it'll take quite some time for the deletions to go through.

FYI the user will need to copy the whole mail file onto his hard drive, uncheck the "read-only property" of the file before being able to read it from Notes. This is required for v4.x, don't know about R5.
