IE has started insisting that I enter http:// for websits that don't use mail.yahoo.com). Firefox (my main browser) works fine, but it seems that IE has a problem. It is fine if I enter a such as but for subdomains and the like I have to enter http:// before I can access a page.

Anyone got any ideas?

Coul that depend on do you use absolute or relative address paths on your settings?

In Internet Options, Advanced, do you have 'enable inline AutoComplete' checkmarked?

Hasn't made any difference what so ever. if I enter google.com it just goes straight to the search page. same for mail.yahoo.com.

This sounds like your HOSTS file may have been hit by malware. The HOSTS file is editable by notepad, and can be found in %windir%\system32\drivers\etc

It should look like this:
[tt]
# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

[/tt]

God, it was a mess. 168kb of junk that I didn't want. Just goes to show that even with antispy software and up to date virus software that they can get in somewhere.
