This is the environment:

Single server, DLT drive (single tape).
Haven't used Legato in 2 years, now using ArcServe.
Need to recover file from 7/2000...have the tape.
Never uninstalled Legato for this purpose.
Go to mount the tape and get the following error:

dlt tape "FC-024" not in media index

I have never used Legato...what can I do to get the tape to be mounted and for me to recover the file from this tape?

Thank a ton.

BTW, the version of Networker is 5.5 build 97 running on NT 4.0

First, I would bookmark the admin guide for your version, which is here.

Typically, you will need to use the scanner command to either bring back in just your media database entries for the volume, media and client indexes, or directly retreive the data from tape.

You will probably just want to physically put the tape in and run
scanner -i <device name>
which will rebuild your media and client index from that tape and allow you to do the point and click recovery.

Depending on your situation, other options may be more useful, for your entertainment, I include a
snip from the admin guide.

The scanner program reads the volume directly, without accessing information that may be available in the media database. If no entries exist in
the media database, you must take an educated guess at which volume
contains the data to recover.
Mount the volume and execute the scanner command with any of its
applicable options. The option that is most appropriate depends entirely upon
the situation, your level of knowledge about the location of the data, and the
nature of the recovery.
The most commonly used scanner options are as follows:
• Rebuild the media database entries for everything on the storage volume
(by executing scanner -m device) and perform a save set recovery.
• Rebuild the media database and client file index entries for everything on
the storage volume (by executing scanner -i device) and perform either a
save set recovery or a client file index-based recovery.
