Hello,

I realize that this may be the place primarily for professionals, so I won't take up too much of your time. I have a problem and if anyone can fix it, I would be eternally grateful! If you have any additional questions, please email me!

2 weeks ago I had a new motherboard and graphics card installed. They worked fine. A week later the F5 button got stuck and I was put in safe mode(I didn't know.) The colors also changed to 16 colors and a resolution of 640X480. I tried everything to get out of safe mode until I realized the button was stuck. When I unstuck it, I was once again out of safe mode, but the colors/resolution didn't change. I tried to change them under control panel/display/settings. It showed me changing the settings, but no changes occured on the screen, or when I restarted the computer. I have reloaded the driver for the graphics card. I have checked to see if I have a monitor under 'color management' under the advanced button under control panel/display/settings. It shows a monitor but no color profile. Could this be a problem? I have tried everything I can think of. I need to have full color so I can run my business. If anyone can help I would really appreciate it. I am at the end of my rope!

Thank you..

KRIS

For starters, delete your video card in device manager. See if it straightens itself out on the next reboot. Ed Fair

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply.

Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

Sounds like you did the basic steps. What brand video card is it?

There are a couple video cards where you have to do it like this to get it to work. I forget the model but try this, exactly in this order assuming you have the correct driver installed. Verify the driver though!!!

Right click on the desktop and click properties.

First, increase the color depth to 16 bit. Then [OK] out of the window and restart the computer.

Repeat the right click on the desktop and now increase your screen size to whatever you perfer to use. 800x600 or 1024x782.

For some reason some cards require it done in that specific order.

also another thing to watch out for is................. the monitor........... if you do not have the correct monitor installed............ windows will not let you increase the colors or the depth...........

My technical advice is to start again from scratch. But this time try in the following order:
-Boot into safe mode and open windows explorer
-go to the INF folder under the "windows" directory and delete any mention of your video driver.
-Then go to start, run, regedit; this will open the registry editor. click on edit/find in the menu and type the brand name of your video card, then click find next and delete every result that comes up on the left side of your window, very important. Hit F3 after every deletion to continue search, until "finished searching the registry" is displayed. Close the editor.
-Now go to device manager and delete every entry under your display adapters, including your card. close the system properties windows and reboot your computer.. windows will most likely load a generic driver for your display. If it says "Standard PCI Graphics Adapter" in the new hardware found box, change it to or install the "Standard Display Adapter (VGA)" instead. It may say this driver was not written specifically for your card. Click on Yes.
-Now, make sure your monitor is either your specific brand or install the Plug and Play Monitor from the list. Then, reboot your computer.
- Congratulations!! You are ready to successfully reload your specific display driver and be able to set it to any resolution you choose. Enjoy!
