Have Network Connection, but no Internet 1

One of our machines is unable to connect to the internet. No changes have been made recently. We are running a NT 4 server and a mixed OS across the network. This specific machine is 2000 Pro. The other day we were noticing problems with the email and internet. So at the end of the day we simply shut down and waited to morning to go any further. The next day we started up the machine and had network access with no issues, but when we attempt to go to the internet we have no connection. Ran Ipconfig/all from command and then pinged the DNS - rec'd an error message back, but it was the same as on another machine that has the net. How is it possible to have network but no internet?

Machine can access local network but not internet.

- Can you ping the internet?
([tt]ping 216.239.51.100[/tt] = ping to Google's IP address)
- Does the client have the correct default gateway address?
- Can it ping the default gateway?
- Does the client need to login to a firewall?
- Is the client authorised to pass any required firewall/router borders?

This little gem was (AFAIK) discovered (or perhaps even created?) by bcastner and has solved many a networking problem. If your winsock stack has become corrupted, this little proggy will do a thorough job of merrily repairing it.

Manarth you are the &quot;man&quot;! We were able to ping both the internet and the default gateway, and there was no firewall to bypass. We did run the winsock fix and rebooted. Presto! We have internet. Thank you very much for your time and advice. I do have a question though - what is the winsock and it's capabilities?

Hi rokerij - glad you're up and running!

'Winsock' is an abbreviation of Windows Sockets - basically it's a windows API (Application Program Interface) that stands between an application (such as MSN Messenger, or Outlook Express) and the internet. It handles your 'socket' connections. It makes TCP/IP work!

After googling 'winsock tutorial' I found some good tutorial sites:

These sites are aimed at developers who want to program something using the winsock API. If you're not a developer, it won't really be of much interest to you, save knowing how to fix it when it's broken!!
