Help please, Win XP SP1 PC, Audigy just fine, then install SP2, access denied 50% of the way through, install does a rollback, warning that some things may not work so well, and its lost me my sound
Tried registry fixes progs, Creative diagnostics say hardware not found, but PC is dual boot and under Win2K audigy works fine. No doubt some tick box or entry somewhere corrupted. I have tried reloading the software from the CD back on, tried also uninstalling from CD then reinstalling, tried uninstall from add/rem progs then new install. Have not removed card as working in win2K so not card seating or cable problem.
Ghost copied back on the copy I made of my boot drive prior to messing about with fixes, then tried for a repair from CD. Went into diagnostics and still fail declared, then whilst thats on screen, I was in word and heard paperclip go tink tink, wow...sound back, ran diagnostics and still fail, so its working, and well, and still diagnostics fail. Who cares if its working
Do a restore point sensibly. (had none prior to SP2 fiasco....or SP2 wiped them ? ...that can happen I read )
Few hrs later after need for reboot, no sound, so did restore to that restorepoint, but still no sound...oh sod ! Now thats frustrating !

Please help, spent two whole days non stop trying to fix this.
Bloody SP2 its screwed up a few other things that I have now managed to recover.

Did you try removing the device from the Device Manager?

or was that part of: "reloading the software from the CD back on..."

Usually, if you remove a device and then reboot the system, XP should see a "new device attached" and attempt at trying to find the drivers for it (if you luck out, you can select the "advance installation" and specify the exact location on the CD.

Hi Miggy D,
Trouble is Device manager is blank following the rollback after the failed SP2 install.
I havent tried removing the card so will try that,as it worked in Win2K side of the dual boot I didnt consider removal on a seating reason as it was seated correctly, but if XP will only play ball if thats removed and reinstalled, then its worth a try.
Cheers

A couple of things to look at if you want to have another shot at SP2.

You receive an "Access is denied" error message when you try to install Windows XP Service Pack 2

"Registry Access Denied"

You could also Slipstream SP2, and all of the later 80 or so updates with your current XP CD and produce a new and up to date for the present XP CD. With this you could then do a repair install, not losing any files or installed programs.

SP2 - Microsoft Support is Free for SP2 Issues

This might be of use if you have had enough of SP2.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

You could always swap your XP troubles for a load of Vista ones.

Thanks Linney,
tried the 873148 route, also tried many other forum permissions settings , plug n play is ok, still fails, decided to rebuild the PC ! It was functional before SP2.
I have XP SP1 disc and SP2 download so with a rebuild, will we be ok to install disc then SP2 before progressing with video card, audio card etc etc, or is this slipstream method of creating an SP2 SP1 XP combined install still the better route even for a rebuild as opposed to a repair ?

My choice would be the Slipstream and Update Pack to create an updated install XP CD and go from there.

There is nothing wrong with doing XP SP1, then SP2, then Windows Updates.

Get the Drivers via the Manufacturers site, not Windows Updates.
