Yeah they happen all the time. Especially newer ones die easier than old ones as they are more sensitive. So be sure when handly good ones that you have discharged all static out of body. There is also programs for testing memmory.

I back-up all my Biz data to 1. tape drive 2. DVD/RW, and 3. memory stick. Sound Paranoid ? Yep, I won't lose anything again after a mishap last year

oh you mean storage sticks, I was thinking of actual memory as in ram. Ignore the memtest link lol.

I know a guy that tried to kill his. Soaked it in water, dried it out, and it worked. Tried to run it thru the dishwasher, and killed it. Another was wasted by salt water in the ocean. Also did a lot of drop tests, which all turned out well.

Microwaves kiled the other one. :)

Most of these available use 'flash memory', a spin off from the EPROM chip with improvements.

As posted, not indestructible, but quite robust.

Memory sticks can be rewritten up to a million times, so say the producers.

I use a PRO SLR digital camera and often I'll pop the compact flash card in the top pocket of my shirt and forget about it!!!
My wife has now washed the same 512 fuji card twice on a full 60 degree cycle in our whirlpool washer.
STILL GOING STRONG. lol
Although it doesn't deserve to.

I've had 4 different manuf. of memory sticks corrupt on me and become unwriteable. Have been using a Kingston for 6 months or so and it seems to be holding in there.

I've never had one fail but I have certainly had to 'rescue' friends' holiday photos from corrupt flash memory. After recovery, reformating the memory has always sorted it out.

I have a colleague who takes work home on a memory stick: but the guy insists on working directly from the memory stick - or at least he forgets to copy it back to his HDD before working. He wonders why it corrupts when he tries to insert a Visio file into a Word document that is still on the stick!

Generally speaking, I'd say they have a high reliability rate.

I work at a university and the lecturers use memory stickas all the time. Yes they DO fail and not backing up their contents onto something more robust is a no no.
Like any IC componant these day, they are suseptable to static. I don;t supose you get mch static in a washing machine thats unles you're washing a nylon shirt.
