Have a microsoftnet/coax filesharing 5 PC's. Total backup cap is 64 GB, required data BU is 8 GB. Net consisting of win 95/win 98/win 2000 prof PC's. Will the Arcserve softw backup these files without generating a bundle of errors on Cookies/temp files/ openfiles etc. Want the backup softw to backup everything with no questions asked, including the registry files. Have a new tandberg SLR 60 GB streamer tape available. Also will the software accept the three peculiar norwegian letters and back files with these included in the filename?

All the best

John, with great difficulties finding software to do a backup job correctly.

As you have 5 PC's all shared with each other and no dedicated fileserver, Arcserve may not be the program you want. It can do a backup of the system it is running on and do a backup of the shared directories/drives, and with added Agents it also will do full backups of connected workstations, but restoring the whole network will be a lengthy process.
After all, we do backups to have a reliable and fast restore when needed, don't we?

If you insist on using Arcserve, I would install it to backup all data on all shares, excluding system files. When it all works like you want, make an image using Ghost or DriveImage ( and or similar, burn that image to a CD and you're done.

To restore data, use Arcserve to get if off the tapedrive. When disaster strikes and one of your PC's breaks/crashes/catches fire use a Win9x bootable diskette (includes CD support) to write the image back from CD to the HD. Then get the data back from Arcserve.
Of course, it's just one solution in the endless row of thoughts and opinions that will reach you :)
