Hello all,

I'm new to solaris.
I just down loaded the gnome 1.4 for solaris 8 on intel and wanted to know how to go about installing it and make it the default desktop manager.

Also can kde work on solaris?

Could you help please?

Thanks very much.

gnome should be a pkgadd program. You will go to the directory where the package has been installed, untarred, or whatever and use the pkgadd command: pkgadd -d . The dot is included.
When the login screen appears, you can use the menu there to choose gnome as your desktop.

Hi there, thanks for the answer, the problem is that first I did not have the gunzip file, so I donwloaded it and untared it, after running the ./configure file, I wanted to run make install and noticed that make is not there.

So from here on I don't know where to begin?

during the install the system could not pick up the 2nd solaris software cdrom so I had to skip.

Could that be the cause of the problem?

Any Idea?

Thank you.

Hi Sina,

that might indeed be the problem. As far as I can remember make is on the second CD-ROM. I experienced quite often that the second CD-ROM was not recognized. You can install that CD-ROM after the OS install, just put it in your CD-drive, it should start automatically. However I recommend using GCC 3.01 and GNU make 3.79. You can get them at as binaries. They install in /usr/local, so be sure that your path includes /usr/local/bin, and if you installed the second Solaris-CD-ROM already, be sure that /usr/local/bin comes before /usr/ccs/bin.
