Has anyone added a DVD to a G3 Blue&white?

I've got a G3 (Blue & White) that came with a standard read-only cdrom. After purchasing an Apple DVD player off ebay, it was only able to read the contents- good for data retrieval but unable to play movies.

As I understand the process, a daugher card DVD decoder is required- but should be included if the DVD symbol is on the drive (which it is).

I'm running OSX 10.2 and attempted download and install DVD player from apple's support. The only error message I got said 'You cannot install DVD Player on this computer.' Descriptive, but not helpful as error messages go.

Any ideas?
