Has anybody upgraded?

Anyone got any first had knowledge of upgrading from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000. I've tried an in place upgrade and that didn't work. I've tried a server to server migration and that didn't work. Has anyone been successful yet? It seems that you can get so far before you hit a dead end. I need to replace the Exchange 5.5 PDC (there are BDC's) with Win2k, Exchange 2k, without upgrading all of the other servers to Win2k. What are the prospects?
