Hello all,

A quick simple questions!!!

When designing/choosing a NAS system how does one chose the hardware specifications of the NAS box it's self?

i.e. what processor, ram, etc... should be picked?

I do know this is "how long is a piece of string"!
But guidance or being pointed towards more information would be great!
Thank you,
Derry

You have not said what this nas will be doing .. and do you mean SAN?

It's upto you, but really storage/controller is where it's at with a NAS/SAN. You don't install OS/software on a NAS/SAN so cpu usage is light if any.

The hardware depends mostly on the number of concurrent users and amount of data that will be stored. Every vendor will be able to link a certain amount of needed I/O's to a certain model of hardware they're selling. These boxes then have a fixed number of processors / memory depending on the model you choose then. Unless you go for a freenas environment , that can be run on a simple server, and then you can put in whatever you want.
