Trying to solve hardware problem with a no name computer that has a AMD 1700, 32 gig HDD using 256 sdram. Every once in awhile it will restart itself after displying the desktop . Took system off of its LAN to trouble shoot.

Looked in the event viewer, but nothing unusual is listed. There is a HP Deskjet 5550 attached to it, but I removed the cable connection to see if it was the proble. Nothing wrong came out of a error-checking process when examinig the HDD.

Can anyone suggest what else I should check?

Windows version?

If Windows XP: Right Click My Computer Properties -> Advanced,
The click the Settings Button inside the Startup and Recovery box, and go down to where it sais System Failure and uncheck Automatically Restart.

O.k. your way out, and wait for it to error out again.

You might be getting a BSOD and can't see it because its restarting autmatically. This way you'll be able to see any Blue screen error.

If you get one write it down, and post it here.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

It is running 2k Pro, however I went ahead and did as you suggested. Have not had it restart on its own or found what could be the problem causing it to fault. Also got no blue screen when I re-started system.

If and when it does on its own, it should give you a blue screen, with an error.

If it doesn't then we are back to sqaure one. But we'll takle that one when it comes.

The first thing to check is cpu temperature and if the cpu fan is working. Then the power supply and that fan too.
Obvious I know but often overlooked.
Is the Hard Drive clean and reformatted or does it still have old user files etc ? It might be useful to clear out old temp files and the Temp internet files. I had a pc that restarted for no reason and it boiled down to crosslinked files that I found doing a full error check and scan of the hard drive.
