Hardware error on cd writer using toast 3.5 (MAC)

i am trying to back up files onto cd. using adaptec toast 3.5 for the MAC and are having an error at the end of writing to the disk. The error says -

"the drive reported an error:
Sense Key = Hardware error.
Sense Code = 0x44.
Internal controller error. "

Then after clicking OK another error appears saying -

"Lead in or Lead out failed to be written."

Can anyone give me any insight into what is wrong, am i doing some thing wrong (first time user) or is the hardware faulty. Any help would be greatfuly received

Is it a 4X spin burner?

I read somewhere that 4X can be sensitive. Did you try setting the burn speed slower?

I wouldn't be surprised if it may have been something that was fixed in a later version of toast which will soon be version 5. [

Is it a SCSI, Firewire, or USB burner? Are you using QUALITY CDR media, not that cheapo stuff? If you're not paying at least 60 cents per disc, we might argue to try a better disc. ...............................

Hi thanks for the prompt reply.
I have a phillips d2 writer, it can only write at x2 (+ x1) speed - i have tried both.

So do you think its down to the version i am running? can i get a demo to try out this theory? if so any ideas as to where this can be obtained?? - i will try the site recommended.

it is SCSI - ultrawide - i have it going to the thiner SCSI connection with the right lead.
What cd make do you recomend??
i will look for the branded name cd-r.

Is it down to the type of files i am copying ??? - i have tried all types - apps - games - doc's...

try put puting the image to the hard drive 1st and rebuild the desk top and you have run a defrag program on it make sure its geting the data as fast as it can burn So long and thanks for all the fish.

We're using a newer Toast product here and it sounds like your CD burner is an older model.

Are you checking speed on the files before you drag them to the toast window?

Tell me a bit more about the process you are going through, step-by-step, and I'll see if there's something I can add.

Have you ever been able to write data using this burner?

Should have nothing to do with the files you are burning unless you are trying to copy some protected software. From your description, it is NOT your files.

What OS are you running and what model machine?

has info on different sense codes. i't SHOULDn't be a toast error...that error should either refer to a specific hardware error or a glich in your scsi chain.....
