Hello,

Please suggest a best way to access and preserve 180 million records in both database perspective and hardware perspective.

Need to know a bit more about the data. How big are the rows, what kind of access patterns, load, type of query (transactional or warehousing application)?

Average size of the row is 600 Bytes

ii) What kind of access patterns?

Load will be more than average(Through screens) and our application is a transactional application.


We anticipated a hardware of 5 CPU , 4 GB RAM machine and the response time is very important.

Please suggest the best suitable hardware configuration and database configuration

I was trying to prompt you to think about your load in a bit more depth. I work on a system that supports several thousand queries per second. So my idea of 'more than average' might be substantially different to yours. Also, you say '5 CPU, 4GB RAM' but you don't say how fast the processors are.

Calculating capacity is based on taking a sample query, and running it under several different controlled load conditions on a test box. Collect statistics during the tests, for (at least) memory, CPU, disk I/O, and network traffic. Then, using your estimates of peak transaction throughput and response time requirements in conjunction with the profile data to work out what your actual needs are. Then probably add 10 or 20% for safety.

But don't go ordering hardware based on something you read in a forum like this. IBM might be able to help you size your application. There may even be a Red Book on the subject.
