Hi there. I am running a sco unix 5.0.7 openserver system
I need to take to a 20/40 hp dat some files.
Up to now their capacity were less than 19 gb , so i have no problem. But from now onworads i have to use a compression to take the back-up and specailly the hardaware compression because the programmer does not want to use any other softwrae compression using gzip..etc
He is taking the back-up using the command "tar"..and he does not want to use any other command ( do not ask why..i do not understand him why he does so )
I have heard that i can modify the hardware compression , in order to take the back in 2:1
Any idea how i can do this ?
thank you

ps: i do know that my english are not good, but i hope that you understand what i am looking for

The DAT should automatically perform hardware compression. Make sure you are using the DDS4 tape cartridges. The compression ratio is dependent on the type of files, so there is no guarantee that you can achielve 40GB.
Another factor which affects compression is the speed of the transfer. The system must be fast enough to keep the tape moving. If the tape drive has to wait for the data, the capacity diminishes.

tape -a 3 setcomp

Hope This Helps, PH.
