Hi,
I have a 40gb Maxtor D470X-6L. I noticed the harddrive was missing a component (the harddrive doesn't work). In this link you can see the backside of the harddrive:
In the topleft corner you can see the component that is missing. It has " 470 " written on it.
My question is, what is this component? I'm hoping that if I get this part I will be able to fix this drive.

The image doesn't show up too well. Could you be wondering about what looks like the mounting point for a small chip?

There appears to be a spot on the board for a 8 leg chip. Whether it is really missing is another question.
Manufacturers figure out ways to eliminate parts during a production run and occasionally use software in the controller chip to bypass the need for the hardware. they can continue using the original board without mounting the part.

What is the problem with the drive? Will it ID? Will it spin?

Thank you for your reply edfair,
sorry if I was being clear, but the picture in the link is a picture of a harddrive that does work. I was just using it to show you what part it is that is missing. The spot you're looking at, look more to the left, the part is there, and the number "470" is written on it. The harddrive I have here does not contain that part and I'm absolutely sure it is missing this part. Part of this component is still hanging on!
I only need to know what kind of component this is so I can try to find it and fix this drive.
And when I try to use the harddrive, i can hear the drive spinning but windows can't recognize the drive. I didn't expect the drive to work anyways..

Before we get into Widows recognizing the drive, can the PC's BIOS pick it up?

To get into BIOS press the Del key, or one of the function keys right after you turn the PC on.

Then look for a section that reads somethng like IDE Configuration or something to that effect, and look for the drive. If you can see it there, that means the drive is functioning, and may only need formatting.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

No, my computers BIOS doesn't recognize the drive either. But that's not where the problem is, there is physical damage to the outside of the drive. I've checked the rest but it seems to me that this is the only problem. I just need to know what part I'm looking for. I only know what it looks like..
(the topleft component with the number "470" on it)

I see now, but I don't know what it is.
Perhaps you could take the complete drive into an electronics store and have them identify it for you.
If you can find an identical part the mounting may become a problem. It looks like it has 4 corner mounts and will probably need surface mount tools to get it in place.

Ok, I'll do that. I think that once I have the part, it'll be no problem getting it on the board. As you can see on the picture you can unscrew it. Thanks for your help, hopefully the electronics store guys know what it is..
