Harddisk data restore software

Hi,
Any advice on this would be really appreciated, im tearing my hair out!!
I have a hard disk which had a lot of viruses on it, i cleaned them all, put it back in the original machine, booted it, OK, I took it out and put it back in the caddy to copy some data to it and booted my machine, it then tells me that the drive is not formatted and would i like to format it.
Can anyone recommend any good harddisk recovery applications?

some more information,
the disk spins up, Its registered when i boot the machine and when windows starts i can see the icon for it in windows explorer, when i click on it it says "This drive is not formatted, would you like to format it now?"
