I get the following errors in the event viewer:
"The device, \Device\Harddisk1\D, has a bad block.

My PC has been crashing so under my warranty from IBM they sent me a replacement Seagate 40GB Hard Drive.

I cloned the drive and I still get the above errors with the new drive. Surely the new one is not faulty too.

Any suggestion much appreciated

Thanks

JP

Run a full format on the new drive, it will tell you if it has any bad blocks.

I really do not want to format the new drive but if I have to I will.

Sometimes it's the only way. Some people don't realise that even a floppy "quick format" - rather than a full format, won't show errors of the media itself. I don't know if the Hard Drive manufacturer's "quick format" will show any problems. With the problems you've had, I would want to be sure.

Before formatting your drive, you may want to run the manufacturer's diagnostics. Usually these tests have a non-destruct mode which, although not as thorough as the destructive tests, will not alter your data.

I believe IBM uses drives made by Hitachi, but check your IBM drive to be sure.
