hard link directories

I believe I've seen instances where directories were hard linked, not symbolically linked as when using 'ln -s'. How would this have been done?
 
Ofd course you've seen it- any time you have lookede at "." or ".." entries, you are seeing hard links.

But those are specialy prepared by "mkdir". Ordinarily, the os will thwart any effort to create hard links to directories by you.
