In have this problem; I am installing this 850 MB Western digital hard drive for one of my professors. He has crucial data on it. I am working with a Dell Pentium II, GX1 series to install it into. I have changed the jumper settings to slave, and went into the bios and changed the secondary IDE to auto detect. I boot up my computer and it is locked up when windows is starting up. I tried changing the jumper to cable select, same thing. I think I have tried everything, but still no luck. If any of you guys have advice I would really appreciate it.

Operating system: Windows 2000, Pentium II processor
Hard drive: Western Digital 850 MB, manufactured in1995.

Thanks again.

If you're just hooking it up to get data off of it and it keeps locking up in Windows, I would boot to DOS and use the XCOPY command to copy the directories you want off the drive.

ran into that problem before with older w.d. drives..if you can set it as a secondary master if you havent tried that already thats what worked for me. some older w.d. didnt like being slaves to the primary
