This should be simple, but I just don't know. I am building a new system and want to know if it is better (by better I mean more efficient and faster) to buy a large drive and partition it for backup, photos, music, etc. or to have seperate drives for these functions?

By backup you mean a safe place? and thats always going to be better on a seperate drive for several reasons:

If the hard drive fails or
picks up a virus but being mounted internally and powered from the same source it will still be vulnerable to power outs and spikes caused by PSU failure.

So safer (to have a second backup drive) but not as safe as say an external HDD which by it's very nature can be unplugged and taken away safely in case of fire/theft and because it only needs to be turned on when you are "backing up" it is less vulnerable to virus attack and the possibility of damage caused by a failed PSU.

If the information is not critical and backups are going to be made by other means? partitioning is a viable and quick option.

A pair of hardrives are also faster, especially if they are mounted on separate IDE controllers (there are two of those in every comp). If you divide frequently used files among the two drives, it will make sure that the load on both drives is more or less balanced.

You can put your page file on a hardrive different from your system drive. That may give you better performance.
